Matcha Cold Brew Oat Milk Tea

Cold brewing matcha directly in oat milk overnight produces something extraordinary — a creamy, mellow, naturally sweet drink with none of the bitterness you'd get from hot preparation. The oat milk's natural sugars meld with matcha's umami over 8 hours in the fridge, creating a drink that's richer and more complex than any quick-mix version. Minimal effort, maximum reward.

Instructions

  1. 1

Sift matcha powder into a jar or bottle with a tight-fitting lid to remove any lumps.

  2. 2

Add a small splash (about 2 tbsp) of cold oat milk and whisk or shake vigorously until the matcha forms a smooth paste with no dry clumps.

  3. 3

Add the remaining oat milk and sweetener if using. Seal and shake well for 30 seconds.

  4. 4

Refrigerate overnight (6–10 hours). The matcha will fully hydrate and meld with the oat milk, creating a smooth, creamy drink.

  5. 5

Shake again before serving. Pour over ice and enjoy. The colour will be a deep, even jade green.

Pro tip

Barista-edition oat milk (Oatly Barista, Minor Figures, etc.) gives the creamiest result as it's formulated to stay smooth and not separate. Regular oat milk works fine but may separate slightly — just shake before serving. This keeps in the fridge for up to 2 days. For a stronger matcha flavour, increase to 1 tsp per 100ml of oat milk.
