Russian Caravan Iced Tea

Russian Caravan — a smoky blend of Lapsang Souchong, Keemun, and Oolong — brewed and served over ice. Smoky, complex, and unlike any other iced tea. The smokiness mellows beautifully when cold, becoming more of a background note than an overwhelming presence.

Instructions

  1. 1

Steep the Russian Caravan in boiling water for 3 minutes. Do not over-steep — the Lapsang Souchong component can become overwhelmingly smoky.

  2. 2

Strain into a pitcher. Stir in honey if using while still warm.

  3. 3

Add the cold water and let cool to room temperature. Refrigerate until fully chilled.

  4. 4

Serve over ice with an orange peel curl, expressing the oils over the glass first.

Pro tip

Russian Caravan blends vary considerably in smokiness depending on the proportion of Lapsang Souchong — some are very smoky, others are subtle. If you cannot find Russian Caravan, blend 2 parts Keemun with 1 part Lapsang Souchong for a similar effect. The smokiness is most pronounced when the tea is warm; it mellows significantly when cold, making this a more approachable drink than you might expect.
