Holy Basil Iced Tea

Tulsi (holy basil) steeped into a clove-like, peppery, slightly sweet herbal tea — one of Ayurveda's most revered adaptogens. The flavour is unlike any other herb: complex, warming, and faintly reminiscent of cloves and black pepper. Caffeine-free and deeply grounding.

Instructions

  1. 1

Place the dried tulsi leaves in a heatproof pitcher. Pour the boiling water over and steep for 8 minutes.

  2. 2

Strain through a fine mesh sieve into a clean pitcher. Stir in the honey, lemon juice, and ground ginger if using, while still warm.

  3. 3

Let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until cold.

  4. 4

Serve over ice with a lemon slice and a sprig of fresh basil.

Pro tip

Tulsi has three main varieties — Rama, Krishna, and Vana — each with slightly different flavour profiles. Rama is the mildest and most widely available. The clove-like, peppery flavour is distinctive and unlike regular sweet basil. Tulsi is widely available as loose dried herb or tea bags at health food stores and Indian grocery stores. It blends beautifully with ginger, lemon, and honey.
